I was a student then and never thought much about why the stars were there, assuming it was for performance, but knew nothing about the metrics for earning it. The TT unis are striking in how similar they were to the later Gamecocks uniforms. Last month I saw Addams bookstore had a great looking hat with the old Carlen block C and the stars embroidered on it. The pullover they had was similar in design but the C and stars were a cheap looking iron on decal.
