Great question, James! My guess would be sometime in the 2010’s when we standardized our shade of garnet (PMS 202 C), and the fonts used across our athletics dept.
From Brooklyn N.Y. to Americus, Ga. isn't what you call a well-travelled route---we both thought the other guy spoke 'kinda' funny, 'ya know what I mean? But Dan and his wife Pam were high school sweethearts- their' high school song--ironic or not was "You better move on!" by George Alexander==it was a ----boyfriend to interloper song of course --If Dan told me that--I would have moved on alright--all the way back to Brooklyn. It got to a point where I would be at their married couples' apartment about 3 nights a week. Shindig and Hullabaloo were on every night it seemed--and Pam and Dan attracted a bunch of young girls 'so what's the problem'--right? One night Dan needed a '4th' for a game of hearts----so 36 years layer he's the head coach of Atlanta's 'Dirty Birds" Super Bowl team and I have him call in the week before the game--I had a radio show here in Columbia--so, he's stuck in traffic on I-185 around Atlanta and I told him --on air--that the first time I ever played hearts with him--was the 'LAST DAMN TIME I EVER PLAYED HEARTS WITH HIM!' He seemed, genuinely surprised and asked why? I said, " because you were the rudest guy I ever played with and were really hard on Pam!"
We did so many things together--some can even be told in polite company! But " The Kid and the Big Brother from Americus, Ga. ( still don't know where that is)----formed a life long bond--even lasted after Dan became a Reborn Christian--surprising as that may seem. I miss him and Pam very much! He was the toughest competitor and the most trusting friend--this "Kid from Brooklyn ever had'.
LOL--brilliant --Hama to Five Points--wonder which direction offers the definitive resting spot?
The Block C "Hell Week" initiation had me--opting out. I had earned my " Letter" on the court---told the upperclassmen exactly where they could put that Block C letter. No changing my mind --no week of torturous hell--not this guy! That lasted right up until Dan Reeves--my best friend and Letterman's Club President cornered me at the Russell House--"Jack, you 'gotta go through this--or you won't get you Block C ring, your Letterman's sweater--you won't be able to come to our Block C Letterman's dance. This a great gift for life--being a Letterman "I said " No way, Dan--ain't gonna do it--I earned the letter on the court" But Dan was--if anything-- tough minded and of great stamina--finally, he broke me down--I went through the initiation--and I told him " I did this for you and only you, Dan!" I used "saltier" language at that time.
Thanks, Alan --for bringing that painful week of hell back up! Had a good day going before reading this!
But, post facto, I read everything you write and I am in awe of your intellect, memory, and , of course, you brilliant writing! Thanks!
Great story, Jack! Glad Happy to dredge up some old painful memories for you :) Also glad you succumbed to the pressure way back then - Cheers to you, and the Pride of Americus, GA, Dan Reeves!
Great read, thanks! I’ve always wondered what year we “updated” the block C logo from Carlen era to the one that is in use today.
