This was a great piece. Dixon was right about The Metro "Frankly, a lot of our fans aren’t going to be intrigued with a home-and-home series with some of these schools. There’s nothing wrong with them, but there’s no rivalry or relationship.”
I've heard for years Roy Kramer told USC they had to pay to be a member, and charged USC $1. Fact or fiction?
Thanks James! I’ll see what I can find about the $1 membership fee. I never saw anything about that previously, but it very well could have happened. There was a whole scuttlebutt about membership fees back in 1976, when talks about USC returning to the ACC got serious for a bit. The $1 thing could have been a knowing wink and a nod on Kramer’s part.
Great read about this tense athletic time in USC Sports history. In hindsight, a Football Metro Conference would been a mistake. The ACC is a natural fit, but it is clear that Tobacco Road did not and still does not want South Carolina. We have and will survive.
So glad we had people in place with foresight, and intestinal fortitude to persuade an invitation from the SEC. The SEC has become a natural fit for USC.

Interesting/informative article. As usual, these articles take me back to forgotten era.
thanks
