I really enjoyed this article and, typical of Allen’s work, it is thoroughly researched and well-written. As a 1975 USC grad, I remember the Jimmy Foster era and all that came along with it. I can’t think of a single Carolina player who played with greater effort and toughness. He was a blue collar bruiser who played with a super high motor. I always wondered about his personal challenges and how life played out for him and it’s great to have a talented, long-form writer like Allen who has the passion and diligence to research and chronicle these historic Carolina sports stories.
Thanks for this, Allen. Another winning entry to your blog. I was a student at USC when he played, and Jimmy Foster remains one of my favorite all-time Gamecocks. Look forward to reading part 2.

Thanks so much, Barron!
